The McManis Law Firm in California is known for making important case law for the public and press when it comes to public records. The firm once sued the town of Los Gatos, San Jose and the Sheriff for requiring ID when members of the public requested records (Naymark Case).
The firm also brought the case that says reporters are entitled to obtain emails of public officials (Ted Smith v. Santa Clara County Superior Court). These important cases make it easier for reporters to do their job when it comes to assuring the public right to know.
Both cases were published decisions issued by the Sixth District Court of Appeal.
So it was surprising when an attorney for the McManis Faulkner law firm didn't want to talk about an appeal brought on behalf of San Jose City Councilman Peter Ortiz against a social media journalist whom Ortiz sued for civil harrassment. Judge Geffon threw the case out after granting @essjtimes anti- Slapp motion and now the court of appeal will decide if Judge Geffon followed the law.
