Fire tornadoes (or fire whirls) in Laos. These fire tornadoes formed on a hillside during an agricultural slash & burn fire. The hot air rising from the fire, combined with winds coming in from the sides create a vortex that takes on the appearance of a tornado, although technically they are not tornadoes at all. The phenomenon is similar to a dust devil that forms on a hot day in a dusty field, but more extreme.
