Fire at Palermo shopping center injures firefighter, forces evacuation
A large fire at the Conca d'Oro shopping center in Palermo forced the evacuation of the building on Tuesday (September 1), while a firefighter was taken to hospital after suffering smoke inhalation, local media reported. The blaze broke out at around noon (1000GMT) on the roof of the shopping center in the Sicilian capital's Zen district, sending a thick column of black smoke over the area.
About 10 fire crews were deployed, with a helicopter also used to tackle the flames. Part of the building's ceiling collapsed as temperatures rose, local reports said. Firefighters said no shoppers or staff were reported injured. The center was completely evacuated, and police and carabinieri were at the scene.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation. Some local reports said it may have started near air-conditioning equipment, but authorities had not confirmed the cause.
