Using a reference photo to find inspiration is an essential skill for all artists. My Patreon challenge this month was to pick a photo from their favorite vacation (or one they'd like to take) and translate it onto a canvas. It's a great way to preserve a memory - and an important skill to learn for commission paintings!

Here is the link to the short playlist of videos in this collab:

And here are the descriptions of techniques and colors used by the artists featured in my video:

Prussian Blue Pthalo

2 grey mixed colors.

Used 3 cups with layered colors and tilted each cup out seperately.
Then swiped a bit to blend some colors.

Nikki Rainey

Base was SW Color To Go After the Rain. Layers, in this order, TLP Rad, Tri-Art Manganese Blue, TLP Comet, Tri-Art Prussian Blue/Charvin Indigo mix.
Double CA of Pebeo Precious Gold and Amsterdam Titanium White.

Cathy Jantzen

We were in Kauai, Hawaii on Poipu Beach when this sea turtle came ashore. I took pictures of him/her coming out of the water and then digging in to rest. My inspiration for the piece I made.

I used a 14x14 wood panel inverted. I painted the panel using a combination of Pebeo Studio iridescent blue black, primary cyan and iridescent blue green. For the water, I used resin mixed with TLP sea glass and abalone, I used playground sand and Eye Candy satori white for the beach.
The turtle is a Pour Away Fluid Arts sea turtle template.

Kathy LaRue

My color palette was inspired by a beautiful photo of Costa Rica which we hope to get to someday.

I did a puddle pour which was wrecked with a marble and
then swiped with white CA.
My colors were mostly custom but will list them as best as I can.

CI Payne’s Gray
Deco Art Extreme Sheen coral, Zeus TLP
Tri-Art Cerulean blue & a little Taffy TLP
Amsterdam Venetian Rose & Aphrodite TLP
Amsterdam turquoise & Golden Teal
Amsterdam Naples yellow & Submarine TLP
