Chandrayaan, the series of lunar exploration missions by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), has played a pivotal role in expanding our understanding of the Moon. From the inaugural Chandrayaan-1 to the ambitious Chandrayaan-2, ISRO’s Chandrayaan missions have left an indelible mark in space exploration.
Launched on October 22, 2008, Chandrayaan-1 became India’s first mission to the Moon. Equipped with state-of-the-art scientific instruments, the spacecraft orbited the Moon for nearly a year, capturing high-resolution images, mapping lunar terrain, and detecting the presence of various elements and minerals. Chandrayaan-1’s notable discovery was the confirmation of water molecules on the lunar surface, revolutionizing our understanding of Earth’s celestial neighbor.
Building on the success of Chandrayaan-1, ISRO launched Chandrayaan-2 on July 22, 2019, intending to further unravel the mysteries of the Moon. This ambitious mission comprised an orbiter, a lander called Vikram, and a rover named Pragyan. While the landing attempt of Vikram didn’t go as planned, the orbiter continued to function successfully, providing valuable scientific data and high-resolution images of the lunar surface. Chandrayaan-2 marked India’s first attempt to land on the Moon.
ISRO’s Chandrayaan missions have paved the way for future lunar explorations. Now, ISRO is planning to launch Chandrayaan-3 in mid-July this year. Let’s hope for the best!!
