This cover was one of my most challenging, I really went all out and I hope you enjoy it! When I hear File Select, it makes me think of all the fun of SM64, so I decided to add a few memorable melodies from it (and even Mario Kart 64). Along with this, I captured some of these parts of the gameplay and edited it along with the song. The bongo parts were a fun challenge. It took a while to think of ways to change it up - sometimes I was inspired by the different songs in the medley.
My background of the piano and bongo videos is a SMW quilt that my mom made for me for my birthday! I love it and couldn't wait to have it in a video. Thank you Mama! During editing, I got the idea to make the whole video's look to be inspired by the quilt. I realized it also looks kind of like the SM64 paintings in a way.
File Select gives me (and so many others) intense nostalgia. I remember the first day playing SM64 and being AMAZED at the graphics/music/gameplay. That N64 is long gone, but I've bought/rebought SM64 on several Wiis and it's one of the games I've replayed most of all.
Did you find all the references to other Mario songs? I bet you did! They're iconic after all! Here they are:
Bom-omb Battlefield
Inside the Castle Walls (reharmonized)
Dire Dire Docks (aka Jolly Roger Bay)
Rainbow Road (they should have used that song in SM64)
At a small part during Rainbow Road, my left hand was influenced by one of my favorite songs - Building Mode 1 from the Sims. It's a tiny part, but whew I love that song.
Fun fact: File Select is the first song I EVER attempted to cover back in 2009. On the same day, I covered Bob-omb Battlefield. They will never see the light of day! Those old recordings are completely acapella too D: In Bob-omb Battlefield, I'm imitating the sound of each instrument and making myself laugh in the recording. It's rough! Now years later, I combined both songs in this new recording. Back then I spent a day making those two songs, but now I spent almost 2 months making this video. I just kept adding to it and went all out in the video editing - more than I ever have before.
