Final Fantasy XIV finally has a confirmed release date for Nintendo Switch 2, launching on August 4th 2026, and in this video I talk through why I am so looking forward to it and what my day one plans are.
A talking-to-camera video on the FFXIV Switch 2 release and my plans going forward.
The Switch 2 version launches on August 4th with an approximately one month free early access period to test server stability before official service begins, and no Nintendo Switch Online subscription is required to play. For me, this version is a big deal for a very personal reason. With my PS5 Pro now gone, the Xbox Series X version requiring an age verification process I am not willing to do, and my PC sessions never really suiting the long stretches FFXIV is best played in, the Switch 2 is set to become my main platform for playing, recording and streaming Final Fantasy XIV going forward.
I also talk through my plans for frame rate testing the game once it launches, and I want to be thorough with it. That means testing across the full range of content the game throws at the hardware, from busy towns like Limsa Lominsa, to open areas fighting mobs, FATEs, four player dungeons, eight player Raids and full 24 player Alliance Raids, covering everything from early game right up to level 100 dungeons. Those larger scale encounters with dozens of players and abilities on screen are exactly where an MMO stresses a system, so they will be the real test of how the Switch 2 holds up.
Let me know in the comments if you are picking up FFXIV on Switch 2, and whether it will be your main platform too. Subscribe for the frame rate tests once the game launches.
