Spotty rain with hit-or-miss lightning strikes are present in some southern areas, but despite some clouds for many, most are starting off rain-free with seasonably pleasant air. Yesterday's storms are once again keeping some of the low-level moisture in place in the mountains to eastern, northern, & parts of southern New Mexico with mostly calming winds.
Similar or mostly slightly higher temperatures are present compared to yesterday morning, still mostly at least slightly above average. Northern areas are mostly starting off in the 40s to lower 60s. Elsewhere to the south, air temperatures are mostly ranging from the upper 50s to the low 70s.
High temperatures will still mostly be way above average, but few areas will experience record to near-record heat. Most areas from eastern New Mexico to the Pecos River Valley area will range from the 80s to near 100° from north-northwest to south-southeast from high to low elevation. The northern higher elevations will mostly range from the upper 60s to the lower 70s, while the northern valley floors to western and central areas will mostly range from the upper 80s to about 100°. Sinking, compressing air with the westward-drifting Monsoon high pressure system over the region, as well as still plenty of sunshine, will lead to daytime heating fueling some thunderstorms.
Isolated thunderstorms will form across the mountains to nearby areas through a decent amount of western areas through the Central Mountains, few parts of the Rio Grande Valley to eastern areas, and some parts of southern to northern areas of New Mexico. Storms are capable of producing some torrential downpours, some hail, erratic wind gusts, and frequent lightning strikes.
Surrounding the Monsoon high pressure ridge in the southwestern part of the country, some trapped upper-level moisture is still circulating out across the region, as well as some lower-level moisture from the Gulf to the southeast. As the high pressure starts to break down tomorrow, a jet stream drop will consequently eventually drop more rain while dropping the temperatures by the end of the weekend into early next week.
