Spotty rain may be present in some southern areas, but most are rain-free with seasonably pleasant air. Some high-level clouds and low-level clouds are present with the aftermath of yesterday's storms sending low-level moisture in place in even more areas of the eastern, central, to southern New Mexico with easterly winds picking up occasionally, including down some of the east-sloped mountain faces.
Mostly slightly cooler temperatures are present compared to yesterday morning, but still mostly at least slightly above average. Northern areas are mostly starting off in the 40s to lower 60s. Elsewhere to the south, air temperatures are mostly ranging from the 50s to the low 70s in southern areas.
High temperatures will still mostly be way above average, but few areas will experience record to near-record heat as northeastern areas will be relatively mild. Most areas from eastern New Mexico to the Pecos River Valley area will range from the high 70s to near 100° from north-northwest to south-southeast from high to low elevation. The northern higher elevations will mostly range from the upper 60s to the lower 70s, while the northern valley floors to western and central areas will mostly range from the upper 80s to around 100°. Sinking, compressing air with the westward-drifting Monsoon high pressure system over the region, as well as still plenty of sunshine, will lead to daytime heating fueling some thunderstorms.
Isolated to scattered thunderstorms will form across the mountains to nearby areas through a decent amount of western to northern areas through the Central Mountains, more parts of the Rio Grande Valley to southern areas, and many parts of eastern New Mexico. Storms are capable of producing torrential downpours, large hail, very erratic wind gusts, and frequent lightning strikes.
Surrounding the Monsoon high pressure ridge in the southwestern part of the country, trapped upper-level moisture is being dispersed out across the region, as well as some lower-level moisture from the Gulf to the southeast. Consequently, thunderstorms today with the lingering heat will be before storms become less numerous closer to the weekend with the heat-up, all before a jet stream drop eventually drops more rain while dropping the temperatures by the end of the weekend.
