The 458 Speciale is one of Ferrari’s most high performance V8s ever. It’s not just a version of the already formidable 458 Italia – it’s a whole new car, and will go down in Ferrari’s history as one of the most sought after models.
The innovations span the entire car and include both Ferrari patents and world firsts. The extraordinary 458 Speciale’s mid-rear 4.5 litre V8 punches out 597bhp at 9000 rpm making it one of the most powerful naturally aspirated V8s ever built at Maranello. The 458 Speciale has a 0-62mph time of 3.0secs and a top speed of 202mph.
The Speciale’s huge amount of power is pushing 90kg less than its 458 Italia sibling thanks to a carbon fibre underbody, thinner windscreen and side window glass, a carbon fibre engine cover, new and lighter carbon ceramic brakes, forged wheels and a deliciously minimalistic interior. In addition, there are also magnetic dampers, stiffer springs and anti-roll bars. The time it takes the engine speed to match the gear ratio on downshifts has been cut by 44% and the Speciale features active aero which reduces drag as speed increases.
Despite all this, what’s remarkable is just how easy it is for mere mortals to tap into that performance. Ferrari have come up with SSC or side slip angle control, essentially a clever algorithm that compares the actual slip angle of the car with a target figure and then adjusts the locking action of the rear differential to suit. SSC positively encourages you to drive up to, and beyond, the tyres’ limits.
