Barracuda: Friend or foe.
Young and smaller barracuda like to roam and forage in schools wheras adult barracuda tend to be solitary, prefering to hunt alone.
They primarily eat fish which can be as large as themselves. They eat a variety of fish including groupers, herring, tuna and snapper. They also eat smaller fish which happen to cross their path unaware of any danger or threat. They have also been known to compete against mackeral and dolphins for prey.
Divers will attempt to observe the nocturnal feeding habits of the barracuda. They have prepared for the night time dive are going to dive a little deeper than usual with the hope of encountering a larger sized solitary, fully grown, adult barracuda.
This can be dangerous as the barracuda is known to be a ferocious and opportunistic predator. They attack with high bursts of speed to catch it's unsuspecting prey.
The large solitary adults are known for being extremely vicious and ferocious.
The divers want to observe the baraccudas feeding habits, but are at the same time very cautious not to draw an unprovoked attack upon themselves.
The teeth of the barracuda are like fangs, similar to that of a piranha. They can inflict painful and nastly wounds from their bites.
A single bite can result in large wounds requiring numerous stitches and hospitalization and be quite serious if bitten in the face or upper chest area as large barracuda can bite and easily strip and tear human flesh right off exposing bone.
