Our Medaka, or Japanese Ricefish, Oryzias latipes, are a type known as Red Cap. Ricefish or Medaka are an extremely hardy, small fish that can thrive outdoors in ponds in all seasons, as long as the pond doesn’t freeze solid. Medaka don’t have true red coloration , unlike some goldfish or koi, but they do have yellow pigment, which can be darkened by black pigment to provide orange markings. Medaka are easy to breed…we have only had these fish for a little over a month, and we have dozens of Ricefish fry!
