Case Type: Railroad: Winn v. BNSF
Description: A vehicle exited off a two lane highway onto a gravel road, and approached a rough and uneven railroad crossing that stood at a sharp angle to the road. The poor crossing forced the driver to slow significantly while negotiating the crossing as well as looking for a train. Due to the poor angle and the imperceptible obstructing vegetation, the driver was unable to see the train approaching.
Visualizations Produced:
After visiting the accident site and performing a laser scan of the area, the 3D laser scan and Total Station Survey were combined to construct the digital terrain model. Photos of the surrounding area were used to create background vegetation and video of the plaintiff driving recorded at the site was used to calculate the vehicle speed coming off the highway, and approaching the crossing. Photos from the day of the accident were used to place the 3D grass and bushes obstructing the driver's view of the tracks from the road, illustrating that sitting in a sedan it would be impossible to see a train coming from the highway and due to the sharp angle of the tracks to the road the driver would have had to lean far over the steering wheel to see the approaching train.
