Case Type: Railroad: Wilson v. Union Pacific
Description: A family traveling along a rural Oklahoma road, approaches a railroad crossing with no crossing arms, only cross bucks. Dense vegetation on both sides of the road, combined with the road not crossing the tracks at a ninety degree angle, prevented the driver from seeing the train coming from his left.
Visualizations Produced:
After visiting the accident site and performing a laser scan of the area, the 3D laser scan and Total Station Survey data were combined to construct a digital terrain model. Laser Scan data, combined with photos of the site at the time of the accident, were used to generate the vegetation that blocked the rails to the left and right. An exemplar van was modeled and placed in the scene to illustrate that based on the vegetation and the angle of the road in relation to the tracks, the driver could not have seen the approaching train.
