Is the satanic panic of the 1980s and 90s really over, or did a retired FBI agent just prove those satanic cults never stopped? In this presentation, former FBI Special Agent Ted Gunderson breaks down the John Van Meter case: a Wisconsin woodsman who was driving home from a conference on Halloween 2004 when he saw black cars disappearing into the Sonoma County woods and a girl tied naked to a tree beside a ritual fire.
What Van Meter did next put him in the crosshairs of something bigger than a cult. He broke up the ceremony, shot the leader, and carried the girl to safety, only to be told by a local attorney to never come back because the police and courts were compromised. A year and a half later two men ambushed him in the woods. He survived being shot nine times with six different weapons, his truck riddled with twenty-five rounds, and the official ruling was that he shot himself. Gunderson lays out how the corruption reached from a county sheriff all the way up, exactly as the cult leader warned him it would.
The most haunting piece is the letter. The abducted woman, still in hiding under a changed name, wrote down everything she remembered on an old typewriter so it would never touch a hard drive: the parking lot in Oakland, the needle in her thigh, the snake-eyed man who tried to put her in a trance, and the stranger with glowing blue eyes who said he was sent by God.
