Face Peelers are real, and Timothy Alberino went two days up the Peruvian Amazon to prove it. After viral videos showed villagers in San Antonio de Pintoyaku firing shotguns into the jungle at black-armored figures floating a meter off the ground, the police closed the case with an absurd story: river miners with jetpacks. Alberino had lived in that jungle for ten years. He knew that was a lie. So he chartered a riverboat, provisioned a terrified village with food and night-vision gear, and traveled to one of the most remote places on Earth to find out what was really happening.
What he found was worse than the legend. A 15-year-old girl named Talia was grabbed in her own backyard by two entities who pinned her, smeared a numbing cream across her face, and made surgical incisions under her jaw with what looked like a laser scalpel before her scream brought the whole village running. A teenage boy turned up with two-thirds of his face cleanly removed and gills cut into the sides of his neck.
