New CIRES research finds fast-growing fires were responsible for nearly 90 percent of fire-related damages despite being relatively rare in the United States between 2001 and 2020. The researchers used satellite data to analyze growth rates of over 60,000 fires in the contiguous U.S. from 2001 to 2020. This video shows satellite data of a few of the fast fires they analyzed, illustrating how quickly fast fires spread.

The new study, published today in Science, shows these fires are getting even faster in the Western U.S., increasing the risk for millions of people.
