Were you lucky enough to see the northern lights this week? Here’s what was happening on the Sun that led to such spectacular light displays!
This video shows three X-class solar flares (strong emissions of electromagnetic radiation) on the Sun on November 9, 10, and 11. The associated coronal mass ejections (streams of hot solar plasma) propagating towards Earth disrupted Earth's magnetosphere and triggered auroras as far south as Florida.
The imagery in this video came from the Solar Ultraviolet Imager (SUVI), a telescope aboard the GOES-19 satellite that monitors the Sun in the extreme ultraviolet wavelength range. CIRES scientists in NOAA’s National Center for Environmental Information calibrate and develop data products for instruments like SUVI that monitor the solar atmosphere. Their work helps forecasters better predict and mitigate the effects of solar flares and other phenomena on Earth.
