Farm boundary fencing has to do more than hold cattle when lifestyle blocks and domestic dogs are next door. Here’s how a failing patched boundary fence was rebuilt with prefabricated mesh, steel end assemblies and the right tension for hilly ground.
On this 1,070-acre grazing property near Burnt Creek in Victoria, the existing stock fence was doing its original job well: keeping cattle in. But neighbouring lifestyle blocks created a new problem. The same fence also needed to keep domestic dogs out, and the collection of light mesh, extra steel and temporary patches simply wasn't doing the job.
We replace a section of the boundary with Murray Stiff Stay 8/90/15 prefabricated mesh and Rotek Drive Tight steel end assemblies, then work through the complete installation.
You'll see how the steel end assemblies are positioned and anchored, why post spacing is reduced on sloping country, where heavier Stockpost XL posts are useful, how to roll prefabricated mesh out correctly, how to terminate the line wires, and how to strain mesh over a hill without removing all of the tension crimps.
We also look at Fence Line Solutions End Clips as an alternative to tying high-tensile termination knots, as well as their strainers. To power the strainer boards Wireman Boundary Strainers were used to tension the prefabricated wire easily.
The important lesson isn't simply which products were used. It's how the whole fencing system works together: strong end assemblies, appropriate intermediate posts, correct alignment, good termination, sufficient mesh tension and materials suited to the animals the fence actually needs to control.
