My Point of View: In business, credibility can be created before competence is tested. We can sell them on trusting us by engineering the first impressions we want, so let's be intentional and let's be sharp.
ð© Classic Menswear Conventions â Know the Rule to Break the Rule
#71. Q: Whatâs the rule for no socks in menâs style?
For business, avoid joining the cool Italian no sock with leather dress shoes look. They are usually wearing leather loafers anyway, which are also out for business. Baring you ankles in business, in public, is way too casual for formal business. It doesnât matter how hot the weather gets, keep wearing socks for business. I really wonder what work these Italian guys do, to be able to run around sockless with suits? I would guess they are influencers, in the rag trade or self-employed. I am self-employed, but I wouldnât dream of turning up to a client meeting in Tokyo sockless, regardless of the hot weather outside.
ð The 4 Vs of Executive Presence: Visual, Vocal, Verbal, Value
ð¯ Who am I meeting and what impression do I want to create:
Economist Intelligence Corporate Network breakfast event on Cyber Security at the Peninsular Hotel in Hibiya
Regular Tokyo Rotary Club meeting at the Imperial Hotel in Hibiya
Meeting with my Director of Training
I knew the cyber topic was popular and would pull a big crowd, so I went with the intention of being the best dressed man in the room and stand out in the crush.
Suit: Brioni Roma 1945 light grey, three roll on two buttoning, Prince Of Wales check with a white window pane pattern suit, notch lapels, Barchetta breast pocket, 35mm double cuffs, flap pockets, side vents.

Tie: Burgundy Shantung silk tie by Fermo Fossati Binago 1871 in a Windsor knot
Socks: Grey over the calf socks
âš Personal Flair
Cufflinks: Tachikawa Imari porcelain Arita 1983.
Pocket Square: Azabu Tailor Osaka 1918 rust pocketsquare 70% wool and 30% silk in a reverse puff. Stabiliser from Kuska Fabrics Kyoto 1936.
Badge: Dale Carnegie New York 1912, silver corporate badge
Pen: Mont Blanc Hamburg 1906
Card Holder: Lanvin Paris 1889
Watch: Vintage gold 3000.2.M model Gucci Firenze 1921 with a very simple black dial.
Fragrance: Quercus Eau de Cologne Penhaligonâs London 1870
ð High Shine Shoes: The high shine shoes were TLB Mallorca 1946 burgundy Adelaide Oxfords Artista series with a Picasso last and punched toe cap French calf from the D'Annonay tannery 1838.
Intention outcomes: With a lot of IT related men assembled, their casual dress code made it easy for me to dominate the room. Everytime I see guys running around casually attired, I feel this is like shooting fish in a barrel !!
