Harry's original work ‘Fantasia No. 1’ won second prize in the Release the Brief category of Guildhall Young Artists (GYA) composition competition, RELEASE 2024.
Harry, from Junior Guildhall, says: "Fantasia No. 1 is a piece inspired by a dance melody that came to me on a train – I often feel that travelling on public transport gives me my most creative ideas. In this piece, I frequently employ contrast in the tempi, rhythms, melodic direction and moods to create more interest for the players and listener alike. Also, I enjoy using relatively classical chord sequences/structures yet with strong romantic influences (e.g. chromatic and extended chords). The main theme is based on a simple, regular, ascending pattern that is expanded upon and decorated throughout. When refining this piece in preparation for the final, one of the things I considered was its accessibility for the piano accompanist; I wanted them to be able to master it with ease, which would allow more trumpeters to perform this piece."
The category judge for Release the Brief was Publishing Manager at Warwick Music, Julie Fews. The piece is performed by trumpeter Thomas Nielsen and pianist Fionnuala Ward.
