Fionrenza Newland won second prize with composition 'Supercalifragilistiespialidoso', in the Digital Media category for Guildhall Young Artists competition, 'RELEASE'.
Fionrenza, Age 16 says: "Because the theme is release, I decided to create a piece of music that tells the story of someone trying to escape after being abducted by aliens. I was inspired by artists like Giant Swan and Burial.
I created this piece on Logic Pro X, and used a combination of midi instruments and samples I recorded myself. Throughout the piece there is a repeated motif, used to signify changing floors on an alien ship, much like an elevator tone.
I created different segments to show different aspects of what each floor might contain. The first segment is meant to show flashing light, and cause confusion. The second, you can hear a muffled sample of a voice. This is meant to show panic and distress. In the third segment, I imagined entering a dimly lit bar, while an alien pianist serenades you. The final segment is meant to be mysterious and tension building, with the drum mimicking a heart beat. The motif is repeated at the end to show that the mothership continues forever, implying you are stuck there."
In March 2021, all 1,600 students who access a Saturday music school across the Guildhall Young Artists network, including Junior Guildhall and the Centre for Young Musicians, were invited to submit a composition to four categories: Songwriting, Digital Media, Music to Picture and Concert Music. As well as cash prizes for the top 3 compositions in each category, participants could also win other prizes including an online masterclass with an industry leading artist.
