Family and friends held a vigil outside City Hall Saturday for a young man hit and killed by police as they raced to a shooting.
Amir Jordan was killed exactly two years ago Saturday. His family held the vigil to let the city know they will not be deterred in their pursuit of justice for Jordan.
"He would be very proud of his family for staying this strong. It's not easy at all. Nobody wants to bury their child," said Jordan's mother, Shenee McClendon.
Dozens of Jordan's family and friends held pictures, candles and heavy hearts as they reflected on a life gone in an instant. On Aug. 29, 2024, Jordan got off the bus in Spring Grove Village to visit his dad. He began crossing the road legally when a police car running Code Red to a suspected shooting hit and killed him.
Jordan's family holds no ill will toward the officer, but they are very concerned about what they believe was a mis-coded call, as they say the shooting turned out not to be an emergency at all.
“He just wanted to be just in the background, but, unfortunately, his death has brought him to the forefront and hopefully to do some good," Paula McClendon, Jordan's grandmother, said.
Jordan's family says they want change to how police handle Code Red calls and acknowledgement from the city for their loss.
"The city has never said anything to us in regards to Amir's death. They have never knocked on the door, said, 'This is what happened,' or, 'We're sorry for what happened.'"
Jordan's pastor, Pastor Gregory Chandler of World Outreach Christian Church, led the group in a moment of silent prayer.
"This is your time to quietly reflect upon his life and the memories that you have of Amir," he said.
"Amir was fun, bubbly, loved animals, loved dinosaurs. He would kill me in here if you say that. Loved dinosaurs to death, loved his siblings, just the best kid ever," Shenee said.
Jordan would have been 21 years old this year. His family is not just hoping for change; they are suing the city and its Emergency Communications Center. Their attorneys called a press conference recently to announce the lawsuit.
"The city's own computer was telling the ECC that no one had been shot and that the alleged shooter was no longer on scene. But the police response continued as a priority one shooting response despite what they already knew," attorney Zach Gottesman said. "After that information was known by the city, almost a full five minutes elapsed before Amir Jordan was killed, and that entire time, the dispatcher could have slowed down responding officers. And if we had, if they had, if they'd have done their job, Amir would be here today."
The city says it does not comment on pending litigation.
