![Family Guide To Horse Riding For Kids
Hey everyone! Since summer is here, I’ve been getting a lot of questions about finding unique camps for the kids. I wanted to look back at our experience at horse riding camp—it was such a transformative summer for my daughter.
I initially had my worries about whether it was safe, but I quickly realized it was so much more than just a sport. Watching her build a real relationship with her favorite horse, Blue, and learning how to respect and work with the animal instead of just trying to control them was a highlight for me. It’s been amazing to see how much patience and maturity she gained from the experience.
If your kids have been spending a lot of time with screens or robotics and youre looking for something different to try this summer, I’d highly recommend looking into local ranches in your area.
I’m definitely not an expert on horse riding, so if any of you have experience with summer camps or have kids currently learning to ride, I’d love to hear your thoughts! Please drop your tips or questions in the comments below—Im sure other parents would love to learn from your experiences too.
Thanks for watching, and I hope you have a wonderful summer of adventures!
Your Questions About Our Horse Riding Camp Experience!
Q: Im a little worried about the safety of horse riding. Were you concerned?
A: Oh, absolutely. I had the exact same concern when I first looked into this type of summer camp [00:00]. I was pretty sure I had the wrong impression about the sport [00:11]. But honestly, we decided to go ahead because my daughter just fell in love with a pony during our first visit to the ranch [00:05].
Q: So, do you think its a safe sport?
A: You know, I wouldnt say its completely safe, but in that way, its just like any other sport—theres always some level of risk [00:20]. I really think the best way to minimize that risk is just to learn how to do it properly [00:27].
Q: What was the most surprising part of the experience for you?
A: I have to say, after just watching from the sidelines for a while, it made me feel like this was so much more than just a sport [02:20]. I wasnt expecting what I saw at all.
Q: What do you mean by more than a sport?
A: Well, I could see my daughter was actually building a relationship with the animals [02:27]. She wasnt just learning to control the horses, she was learning the proper manners and etiquette to work with them [02:33]. She was learning how to respect the animal and how to work together, which was just a fascinating thing to watch [02:41].
Q: How did your daughter handle the horses?
A: She was great! She told me a few times that she could feel her horse, Blue (thats her favorite!), was having a bit of a temper and wasnt quite following her instructions [02:00]. I was just so glad to see that she managed to stay calm and be patient with him [02:00].
Q: What was that story you mentioned about the Disney internship? A: Oh, that was so interesting! Later in the year, when we were traveling, I met a woman who got an internship at Disney World through their college program, working at Animal Kingdom [00:41]. It turned out she had been taking horse riding lessons since she was four [01:01]! Her mom was also worried it was dangerous at first [01:07]. I just thought it was an encouraging little story, seeing where a childhood interest like that could lead [01:38].
