The first All-Ireland senior hurling medal won by disgraced Kilkenny hurler DJ Carey is being offered for sale at a €10,000 asking price by a family who had been conned the player.
The proceeds are intended to assist two people who the medal owner says suffered financial hardship as a result of Carey’s cancer fraud.
Whyte’s Auctioneers confirmed that the 1992 All-Ireland medal is being sold by private treaty. The nine-carat gold Celtic Cross medal was won when Carey helped Kilkenny defeat Cork in the All-Ireland final, securing the first of his five senior All-Ireland titles.
Carey gifted the medal to its current owner almost a decade ago as a gesture of gratitude for financial assistance for what he claimed at the time was treatment for cancer.
