Bethesda has revealed their newest Fallout game: Fallout 76. Everyone was immediately excited for a brand new adventure in the wasteland. Here’s the problem: Fallout 76 probably isn’t what you think it is.

Fallout 76 Isn’t What You Think It Is (in text form)

The first piece of this puzzle comes from 4chan. On December 28, 2017, someone said that the next Fallout game would be Fallout 76, a Fallout themed Rust clone. Rust is a multiplayer-only game where you survive in the wilderness by crafting items and building rudimentary structures. Someone posted about Fallout 76 again on May 12, 2018 saying “? Fuck if I know if it’s going to be at E3. It’s called Fallout 76, I heard about it over the holidays so it might’ve been canned”. A third mention of Fallout 76 came this morning with the user saying “figuratively, yeah. it's called Fallout 76 and the map is set alongside an interstate highway. don’t know much other than that”.

It’s one thing to suggest a new genre for the Fallout franchise, but to correctly state the name of the game 5 months before its reveal lends credence to the idea that they’re right. Yesterday, on May 29th, Kotaku’s Jason Schreier wrote an article about Bethesda’s Fallout live stream. Towards the end of the article he said “Some fans have also theorized that this might be some sort of remaster of Fallout 3 or Switch port of Fallout 4, but from what we’ve heard, this is a new game, one that takes the series in a brand new direction.” A brand new direction suggests that it’s not just a new setting, but a new type of game that the Fallout franchise hasn’t tacked yet. Schreier also said on Twitter “if you spend weeks getting hyped for a single-player RPG, you will be disappointed.”

If you’re wondering about Jason Schreier’s credibility, he confirmed all the way back in December 2013 that Fallout 4 would be set in Boston, there would be an engineer character named Sturges, a radio DJ named Travis, and the Institute being a part of Fallout 4.

Another hint about Fallout 76 being a survival base-building sort of game comes from the teaser trailer itself which concluded with a voiceover saying "When the fighting has stopped and the fallout has settled, you must rebuild”.

There are rumors going around that Fallout 76 is being developed by Bethesda’s Maryland studio and their studio in Austin, which was formerly known as BattleCry Studios. BattleCry studios were working on Battlecry, an online PVP game with “team-based combat, intense tactical warfare and competitive multiplayer action”. Battlecry was shown at Bethesda’s 2015 E3 showcase. In October 2015, Battlecry Studios announced that they had halted production of Battlecry to work on other projects. It’s possible that Bethesda hired them to help with development of Fallout 76. After all, Bethesda acquired them in March 2018 and renamed them Bethesda Game Studios Austin.

Here’s the potentially cool thing about Fallout 76 possibly being an online survival-type game. If there’s any preexisting franchise that would fit this genre, it’s Fallout. Rumors and speculation suggest that 76 is going to take place 25 years after the Great War, so we’ll get to see a freshly annihilated West Virginia. No settlements have been created, no Brotherhood of Steel, no Legion, no Railroad, no NCR. Instead of trying to save your vault or track down your son, you’re goal is simply to survive.
