This hits different on Final Round Jinxed. Can't believe Jinxed started as my absolute least favorite round in the whole game, and now that it's in Squads Show with FAR fewer players crowding the map, it's become one of my favorite rounds in the game--not just my favorite team round, one of my favorite rounds period (not my absolute favorite though).

Composed for @etherauds chiptune competition held in their server, where the challenge was to compose a tune using only the specific collection of samples Ether themself provided, and no other kinds of instruments. All samples were made by Ether, whether theyre hand-drawn waveforms, synthesized sounds, or acoustic recordings.
Tied for 4th place (out of 7 entries) with @EntropyAuthor and @captainoftheorangejuice. Congratulations to @whimsolation for winning the competition!

So for those who dont know, I worked on a ROMhack recently. Specifically, it was an improvement hack for the utterly terrible NES version of Lemmings. Among its MANY problems was the sound. The bass notes were so short you could barely make them out, the instruments were almost all really basic and unfitting, there were some EXTREMELY obnoxious arpeggios, and the percussion was literally broken.
I took it upon myself to dig deep into the music driver, understand how it works, and alter all sorts of music data (and the driver itself) until I got the music to sound good. I edited instruments, fixed some wrong note data, and bodged in a fix for the percussion (my code is truly awful lmao). I didnt have the space to add too many new sequences, so I couldnt change the tracks too awful much, but its still a massive improvement, and Im pretty proud of what I was able to accomplish just by messing around in MESEN for a few weeks.

The fourth in a series of videos dedicated to making one particular composition work on multiple systems. I realized what was originally the sawtooth bass would work fine as a periodic noise bass instead. I had to adjust the key a bit to make the square bass sound... *okay.*
This uses the silent noise tick trick to get punchier percussion by only starting to play the noise sound once its further ahead in its sequence.

Yep, this is a thing you can do :) Neither FamiTracker (any fork) nor Furnace lets you do this, but its pretty simple to program. Ill make an actual song with this... Some Day™.

The title doesnt have much significance (I am so good at naming things). All it really refers to is the fact the kick sample showcased here is only THIRTY-THREE BYTES and is still functional. To accomplish this, it is played at the lowest pitch possible, and the audio level of the DPCM channel intentionally ends up lower at the end of the sample than what it was when it started, so I can directly write a value to the audio level at the start of the sample, and since it ends at a different level, writing the same value every time produces a voltage click which works just well enough to be an attack for this kick sample. I also had to do a lot of faffing about in a hex editor to get the sample to behave exactly how I wanted it to, e.g. changing how much it slopes up or down, finagling the amplitude over time, and reducing whining artifacts as much as possible. But in the end, it just works!
NOTICE: This track takes advantage of the NESs non-linear mixing, and while I dont know how to show that PROPERLY in these videos, I can scale the waveforms up or down to at least get closer to the actual mixing. For most of the track, the bottom three channels are all significantly quieter than they would be playing alone, so I scaled them down relative to the pulse channels.
