FAA Recreational Drone/RC Pilot Test - Good News!

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced on February 22, 2021 the final steps in the roll out and implementation of the FAA Recreational RC pilot test (same at the recreational drone pilot test). In short, this test should be available for recreational RC and drone pilots in early summer 2021. Note that the FAA has not announced a schedule yet of when recreational RC pilots need to actually take this test.

The need for testing recreational, or "Sunday RC pilots," was formally put into place with the Nov 2018 enactment of the FAA Reauthorization Act, a $16.8B bill that determines what the FAA will do in the coming years.

Part of this was to direct the FAA to train drone and RC pilots. The first step was the FAA Part 107 testing of pilots flying for profit. This video covers the next step, what to do on the recreational drone pilot test.

Talks between stakeholders and the FAA have been going on since March 2019. The Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) has been a key advocate. AMA partnered with the FAA on what the test should contain, how the test should be administered and how to structure the test.

In short, the recreational FAA RC pilot test will be on-line and at no cost to the user. The FAA should determine by June 2021 who can provide the test.

The good news is that the test looks to be "correctable to 100%, in other words a learning and training session for the recreational RC and drone pilot.
