F-105 Thunderchief – Supersonic Workhorse of the Vietnam War
The Republic F-105 Thunderchief, nicknamed “Thud,” was one of the most consequential strike aircraft of the Vietnam War. Originally conceived in the 1950s for low-altitude nuclear delivery, the F-105 evolved into a formidable conventional bomber and later, a pioneer in Suppression of Enemy Air Defences (SEAD). This documentary traces the complete history of the Thunderchief—from Cold War concept to its final missions as a Wild Weasel platform.
We begin with the aircraft’s origins at Republic Aviation, led by designer Alexander Kartveli. Developed as a Mach 2 fighter-bomber capable of carrying a 14,000 lb payload, the F-105D became the largest single-seat, single-engine combat aircraft of its time. Technical innovations included swept-forward intakes, an internal bomb bay, advanced radar systems, and the powerful Pratt & Whitney J75 engine. Yet the F-105’s complex systems posed constant maintenance challenges, and its deployment was shaped by shifting Cold War doctrines and funding cuts.
In Vietnam, the Thunderchief took centre stage. Assigned to units like the 355th and 388th Tactical Fighter Wings, F-105s flew over 20,000 combat sorties, often into the most heavily defended airspace on Earth. Missions over Hanoi and Haiphong tested the aircraft and its crews against dense AAA, SAM barrages, and MiG fighters. Though designed for high-speed nuclear delivery, the Thud adapted to conventional strike, earning its reputation as a rugged, mission-capable platform—but at a steep cost: 382 aircraft lost, the highest attrition of any USAF type in the war.
The documentary also details the F-105’s transformation into a Wild Weasel aircraft, taking on the perilous role of SEAD. The F-105F and G variants—equipped with radar warning receivers, Shrike missiles, and Electronic Warfare Officers—led the charge against North Vietnamese SAM sites under the mantra: “First In, Last Out.” Their legacy lives on in modern SEAD doctrine.
Retired in the 1980s, the F-105 left an indelible mark on American airpower. From nuclear strike deterrent to frontline conventional bomber to SAM hunter, the Thunderchief’s service reflects the adaptability and grit of Cold War air combat.
