In the late 1970s, France quietly began developing a powerful new fighter intended to rival the world’s best—an aircraft comparable in size and ambition to the F-15. Known as the Mirage 4000, this twin-engine interceptor promised exceptional speed, range, and multirole capability, and early flight tests suggested it could be a formidable contender. Yet despite its performance and potential export interest, the project never entered production. In this video, we explore the origins of the Mirage 4000, its remarkable design, and the political and strategic decisions that ultimately left it as one of aviation’s most intriguing “what-if” fighters.
