Iain Petrie | Extreme Astrophotography at ISO 25,600! Orion Nebula M42 high ISO test with Nikon DSLR & 10" scope. @IKP1000 | Uploaded February 2022 | Updated October 2024, 13 hours ago.
Using my newly acquired Nikon D3300 (released in 2014) attached to my 10" Meade LX scope from 1991, I tried the Orion Nebula at the camera's highest ISO setting of 25,600. I lost over half the images due to wobbles in the scope, mostly caused by an increasing breeze, but ended up with 84 x 3s subs = 4 mins 12s, and the core of the nebula with 118 subs at 2/3s = 1 min 30.
So the total time for this was a mere 5 mins 42 sec of capture, which is ridiculously short, but I'm happy with the result and will be trying more extreme high ISO astrophotography experiments in the near future!
