The original single-seat Extra 230 was designed to meet the requirements of competition pilots with the Swiss Aero Club, and it first flew in 1983. In 1987 the two-seat Extra EA-300 was introduced. It's design was based on the Extra 230, but instead of wooden wings the new aircraft had a carbon fibre composite main spar and skins.
