Controlled Demolition, Inc. (CDI) of Phoenix, Maryland, USA, acted as Explosives Subcontractor to Total Wrecking and Environmental, LLC of Tonawanda, New York, at the C.D. McIntosh Power Plant in Lakeland, Florida. On March 4, 2023, CDI performed the explosives lowering of the 225’ tall Unit #3 Boiler House/integral Hung Boiler, and the 620’ long, 160’ tall, High Coal Conveyor System that ran just outside of the active substation at the site. CDI’s engineered preparation of the Unit #3 Boiler House easily resisted wind gusts of up to 40 mph just hours prior to CDI’s felling of the unit without incident. The Boiler was felled on schedule to yield a 44’ tall well broken, well positioned debris pile to facilitate rapid and safe removal. The High Conveyor System was rolled away from the switchyard without damage to same, dramatically reducing extended exposure of workers to demolition operations at high places and avoiding the risks associated with cable tripping of the structure immediately adjacent to the switchyard to remain. This was Phase II of the project.
