Ah, Snow Canyon. Everyone talks about Zion National Park, but right nearby is the amazingly diverse landscape called Snow Canyon State Park. I've been here before, but didn't have the time to properly explore. So when we were in the area, we decided to set aside a day and do just that. I pieced together the best trails in the park and they did not disappoint.
We started at the Butterfly Trailhead and hiked out into the Petrified Sand Dunes. From there, it was a short walk to the lava tubes. The first (southern) one was easy to get into but pretty short. Still worth stopping by. The second one was tricky to get into but much longer. Despite all the complaints about pee, trash and graffiti, it was absolutely worth it.
Bring headlamps. And spare batteries.
After that, we drove a short way to Jenny's Canyon trailhead. Super short, but worth it.
Finally, we headed to the Scout Cave trailhead (also called Johnson Canyon). This was the longest hike of the day (about 3.5 miles), but still pretty easy.
There is definitely more to see in the park, but I think we hit the high points.
Not much else to say. Amazing scenery that's easily accessible.
Oh, bring headlamps, batteries and make sure you use the bathroom before going into the caves.
Oh, and Pepper's Cantina in St. George has some of the best chips and salsa around. Just go for the medium salsa unless you can really take the heat. The beans and rice get an honorable mention too. Usually they're bland, but Pepper's beans and rice had great seasoning. If you're in St. George, check them out.
