The term Sanatorium, is a medical facility for illnesses, mainly for tuberculosis during the late nineteenth center. The first Sanatorium in the US was built in the early 20th century, in North Carolina. There were actually a few built there before anywhere else in the States. When antibiotics were discovered, this resulted in a decline of Sanatoriums because now there was a cure for this illness. If you are lucky, you can find some that are still standing, not functional, but hidden behind trees, waiting for some new life to come around...
