In this video, we dive into an experimental, proof-of-concept R&D workflow exploring AI-assisted digital matte painting (DMP) using Photoshop, Nuke, and Griptape Nodes. This pipeline is built to showcase how generative models can be surgically controlled by a compositor instead of letting the AI generate assets randomly.

First, we set up a classic 2.5D environment in Nuke by breaking out a layered Photoshop PSD, mapping elements onto 3D cards using the GeoCard node, matching camera perspectives with a CameraTracker, and finishing the grade with the VolumeRay node.

From there, the experiment begins: we use a standard Nuke Roto node to paint an intentional guide mask, which is passed directly into Griptape alongside reference mountains. We explore an agentic prompt workflow across multiple models (Flux 2, Nano Banana Pro) to demonstrate how the AI successfully listens to the Nuke vector strokes to generate highly detailed, seamlessly matching background terrain. Finally, we see how to extract alpha edge masks through the GPT image two model and round-trip the generation smoothly back into our final Nuke comp.
