Christoph Hänsli is a Swiss conceptual artist using traditional painting to depict everyday objects. ‘Panikbeleuchtung’ (‘Panic Lighting’) is an extension of his motivic canon of “order” and “preservation” to include “warning.” The Kunsthalle Bielefeld and the Institute for Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research in Gatersleben served as the starting point for the works on display. ‘Panikbeleuchtung’ is a warning of sorts that the Institute’s collection of specimens and plants dawns toward disposal, just as the technically outdated switches and warning lights in the Kunsthalle do.
