It is no exaggeration to say that Half Life, released in 1998 and developed by Valve, is an incredible game and that its introduction to Black Mesa is one of the greatest videogame moments ever.
A 15-minute or so long section introducing you to the world of Half Life, Gordon Freeman and his workplace of Black Mesa, its presentation and ingenuity was so ridiculously far ahead of any other FPS available at the time, that I could scarcely believe what I was playing when I first got my hands on Half Life.
In this video, I analyse everything from the context surrounding Half Life's 1998 release, it's design and legacy, to try and explain why Half Life's opening might just be the best ever made.
