Here is a passage that I think rules out Calvinism:
And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name. (John 20:30-31)
The Apostle John was summing up why he wrote about the life of Jesus: he wanted to give evidence that Jesus was the Son of God. That also is the reason Jesus did miracles--to prove who He was.
If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; but if I do, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.
(John 10:37-38)
People need to be convinced of the truth. John and Jesus did not say, "If you were elect you would believe." They said, "There are reasons you should believe."
I think that John would have trouble with the idea that regeneration precedes faith. I think he understood that a person has to look at whatever evidence he has (miracles of Jesus, the Bible, creation) and decide if he’s going to believe it.
