If you were standing on the West Virginia side of the Ohio River’s Silver Bridge at 5:00pm on December 15th, 1967, you might have felt a rumble, or heard a strange sound like a guitar string breaking in slow motion. Fractions of a second later, you’d watch as the opposite end of the bridge, on the Ohio side, suddenly disappeared from view. Within an instant, the collapse would work its way eastward across the structure, coming undone piece by piece, and taking cars, trucks, and travelers with it; until finally, with a sound like one great shotgun blast, the entire bridge fell into the river. In mere seconds, thirty-two vehicles plummeted into the Ohio, taking with them sixty-four people - most of whom would fall victim to drowning, debris, or hypothermia. Ultimately, investigations would determine that the culprit was, as it usually is, improper maintenance of the bridge. Already handling more traffic than it was built to withstand, one of the bridge’s outdated eyebars snapped, and that one failure kickstarted a chain reaction which led to the rest of the structure rapidly becoming imbalanced. It was a simple, avoidable oversight, but it was one which nobody saw coming - or was it? Welcome back to The Lore Lodge...
