On a cold April morning in 1874, a man stumbled across the frozen waters of a lake in the untamed wilderness of western Colorado and through the front door of the Los Pinos Indian Agency. Shoeless and carrying only a rifle, a knife, a coffee pot, and a satchell, the man identified himself as Alfred Packer, asked for a glass of whiskey, and sat down to tell the staff a tale of tragedy in the high peaks of the San Juan Mountains. From there he told the story that would forever change his life , one of desperate survival. However, over a series of years and inquisitions, Packer told many versions of the story, often growing more grotesque and inhumane with each retelling as those around him sought to find the answer to the haunting question: Did Alfred Packer willfully consume his prospecting party?
