The National Parks and Wildlife Service has described the impact of this summer’s wildfires on flora and fauna in the Dublin Wicklow Mountains as “apocalyptic”.

Swathes of land were scorched as fires burned for three weeks during the hot spell.

Experts are now worried the ground will not be able to absorb the rain like it once did, increasing the risk of flooding as the water spills more quickly downhill.
