This Scottish royal history documentary from History Calling showcases the complete history of Scottish monarchs from 848 to 1625 (the Union of the Crowns had occurred in 1603 when James VI became James I of England). It explores the reigns of every king and queen to sit on the throne of Scotland, including the famous, the forgotten, and the controversial. You’ll hear about the lives and legacies of Scotland’s most iconic rulers like Macbeth, the real king behind Shakespeare’s legend, Margaret, Maid of Norway, whose tragic death sparked a succession crisis, James IV whose marriage to Margaret Tudor set the scene for the ultimate joining of the English and Scottish crowns, the tragic Mary, Queen of Scots and her son James VI. You’ll also uncover the stories of lesser-known rulers who shaped Scotland through war, alliance, betrayal, and political intrigue.
Each monarch’s biography includes key facts: birth and death dates (where known), years of reign, major events, battles, successions, and legacies. Whether they ruled for decades or mere months, every Scottish king and queen left their mark on the Kingdom of Alba and later the Kingdom of Scotland.
Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a student, or just curious about the real lives behind the legends, this video offers a detailed and engaging journey through one of Europe’s most fascinating royal lineages.
This video is perfect for history lovers, students, researchers, and anyone curious about the royal bloodline of Scotland. Explore how the Scottish crown evolved from the early medieval period to the dawn of the British monarchy.

![MH370 documentary | greatest aviation mysteries | what happened to MH370? | famous missing airplane
WHAT HAPPENED TO MH370? It’s one of the greatest aviation mysteries of all time; a Malaysian Airlines plane took off from Kuala Lumpur International airport on 8 March 2014 heading for Beijing, but it never arrived and none of its passengers and crew ever came home. A huge search operation was launched, but over the coming days an already disturbing story only got stranger. The plane had deviated from its assigned flight path. Someone had deactivated its transponder to make it invisible to secondary radar. It had been manually flown back over Malaysia, including over the island of Penang and after it dropped off military radar it couldn’t be tracked at all, except by a series of handshakes between its onboard computer system and a satellite belonging to the British company Inmarsat. These handshakes suggested two arcs of travel, the most likely one being south, deep into the Indian ocean where it flew until it presumably ran out fuel and either crashed or was ditched around seven hours after its final contact with air traffic control. The later recovery of some small pieces of wreckage from places including Reunion Island supported this theory. Search efforts by the Malaysian authorities, Australia’s ATSB and the private company, Ocean Infinity, lasted for years, but nothing of significance was found. For this flight MH370 documentary from History Calling I have used official reports into the mystery and listened to MH370’s final messages and to interviews with those involved in the search to reconstruct the strange tale of this famous missing aircraft. I will lay out its last known movements, tell you what we know about the passengers and crew of MH370, explain why suspicion has fallen on Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah, reveal why we haven’t found MH370 and consider the likelihood of it ever being located.

![The SHORTEST WAR EVER | The history of Zanzibar | Results of British colonialism | The 38 minute war
What was the BRIEFEST WAR IN HISTORY and how was it one of the results of British colonialism?
It was begun and won on 27 August 1896 and has entered the Guinness book of world records for being the shortest war ever, taking less time than a flight from Edinburgh to London, but what caused the conflict, who fought in the shortest war ever, who won the shortest war ever and just how quick was it? Today on History Calling, I give you all the answers as we look at the Anglo-Zanzibar war, otherwise known as the 38 minute war. That’s right; it took the British (who were the victors) less than three quarters of an hour that morning to depose the would-be Sultan of Zanibar, who had ruled for only two days and whose name was Sayyid Khalid bin Barghash. The death toll stood at around 500 (almost exclusively Zanaibari soldiers and other supporters of bin Barghash), but the ex-Sultan escaped to the German embassy and went into exile, ultimately dying in 1927.
The fight arose because of the colonial nature of the history of Zanzibar at the time. Britain had claimed control over the island and there was a law in place saying that they had to approve any new Sultan. Sayyid Khalid bin Barghash ignored this rule when he tried to take the throne after the suspicious death of the previous Sultan, Hamed bin Thuwaini and when he refused to capitulate after receiving warnings from the British to surrender, they opened fire on the royal palace from the harbour, causing huge damage, which you’ll see pictures of in the video. They also sank the Sultan’s personal yacht, His Highness’ Ship Glasgow, the mast of which remained sticking up out of the water for decades to come.

![ISABEL NEVILLE, DUCHESS OF CLARENCE | Forgotten women of the Wars of the Roses | History Calling
ISABEL NEVILLE is one of the most frequently forgotten women of the Wars of the Roses; the multi-generational battle for the crown between different branches of the Plantagenet family, the Yorks and the Lancasters, which took place in 15th century England. Born at Warwick Castle in 1451, she was the eldest daughter of Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick (known as the King-maker) and Anne de Beauchamp. This made her a member of one of the most powerful and influential families of the day and a great heiress, but it also left her vulnerable to the changing fortunes of that family as her father’s shifting loyalties upended her life again and again.
In 1469 she was married to the King-maker’s first cousin, George, Duke of Clarence who was the younger brother of Edward IV and older brother of the future Richard III making Isabel the King’s sister-in-law. The marriage went expressly against the orders of King Edward though his mother, Cecily Neville, Duchess of York, may have agreed to it. The following year her husband and father were forced to flee England in 1470 after a failed coup against Edward. Isabel went with them and tragically lost her first child on the journey. This baby was either stillborn at sea outside Calais, or was born and died very quickly on the boat. She would go on to have two surviving children; a daughter named Margaret, later Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury who was executed by Henry VIII and a son named Edward, Earl of Warwick, who was executed by Henry VII.
Her younger sister was Anne Neville, who became the Lancastrian Princess of Wales through her first marriage. When she was widowed just weeks after the death of their father however, Anne was sent to live with George and Isabel with George keen to avoid her remarrying and taking her half of the Warwick inheritance to her second husband. Remarry she did though, to his brother, then known as Richard, Duke of Gloucester, making Isabel and Anne both sisters and sisters-in-law. Isabel didn’t live to see her sibling become Richard III’s queen however. She died in December 1476 at the age of just 25, probably from delayed childbirth complications. Her baby (a boy named Richard) died on 1 January 1477.
This video from History Calling will cover the life of Isabel Neville, Duchess of Clarence, England’s tragic and forgotten royal duchess and will help you with understanding the Wars of the Roses.

![CHARLES II’S SECRET QUEEN? Who was Lucy Walter? England’s secret queen | Who did Charles II marry?
Who was LUCY WALTER and was she Charles II’s secret wife and the woman who should have been Queen of England? If so, that would mean that Charles II’s son by her, James, Duke of Monmouth, was legitimate and the rightful heir to the throne after his father’s death in 1685, rather than his uncle, James II. The question of whether these two ever wed is therefore of critical importance.
Born in around 1630, Lucy was a Welshwoman who had made her way to France by 1648 where she became the mistress of Charles, Prince of Wales (as he was then). In 1649 she gave birth to their only child together. That same year Charles became the titular King of England, after the Parliamentarians executed his father, Charles I and abolished the monarchy. Over the next nine years the new King Charles and Lucy (who also went under the aliases Lucy Barlow and Lucy Barlo) had a fraught relationship as their romantic entanglement ended and Lucy became the mistress of several other men and moved around Europe, even ending up a prisoner in the Tower of London at one point. The King eventually removed their son from her care in 1658 and Lucy was dead by the end of the year, having supposedly confessed just before her end that she had married Charles.
Less than two years later Charles regained the throne in 1660, brought his illegitimate son to England and married Catherine of Braganza in 1662, but the couple had no children. This left his brother, James, Duke of York, as heir to the throne. He had converted to Catholicism however and there was therefore great interest in making the Protestant Duke of Monmouth heir in his place. This could only be accomplished if the boy was legitimate and for that, Charles and Lucy would need to have been wed before his birth. Charles however, always denied that he had married Lucy, despite the fact that it would have solved his problem of having no legitimate children. Was he telling the truth though? What evidence is there that he and Lucy married and was there really evidence of this secret royal wedding in a mysterious black box? In today’s Stuart history documentary from History Calling, we find out.

![The King who died of diarrhoea | What was found in King John’s coffin | How did King John die?
Why was the death of King John so gruesome, not to mention smelly and what was found in King John’s coffin when it was opened in 1529 and 1797? In this Plantagenet documentary from History Calling, we look at the death of King John in 1216, at why many medieval chroniclers thought that he got what was coming to him, at what was buried in King John’s coffin along with him and what the inside of King John’s coffin looked like when he was disinterred in 1529 and 1797.
King John was the villain of the Robin Hood stories and has gone down in history as one of England’s worst Kings, a man hated during his lifetime and despised after his death, but what killed King John and was it truly a terrible death? In this video I use original sources including Roger of Wendover, Ralph Coggeshall, Matthew Paris and Valentine Green to reveal the misery of King John’s final days.
By 1216 King John had already been forced by his nobles to sign Magna Carta and was facing an invasion from the French Prince Louis who had been offered the throne of England by the English nobles after John failed to abide by the Great Charter’s clauses. In the course of fighting to regain control of his kingdom, he fell ill with dysentery on the night of 9-10 October 1216 in the town of King’s Lynn, possibly because of greed at the dinner table. What is dysentery though, I hear you ask and how could it kill a King? Put simply, it’s an infection in your bowels which causes diarrhoea with blood in it. Nowadays it can be treated, but in the 13th century it could and did kill. John’s final days were miserable. He lost his baggage train in the Wash including the English Crown Jewels before struggling on to Newark where he died on the night of 18-19 October aged about 49. You may also be wondering, where was King John buried? The answer is at Worcester Cathedral, as per his final instructions and in this video I’ll also reveal what he was wearing in his coffin and at what was found when he was dug up (twice).

As part of this Hollywood vs history approach we’ll look at topics like the costumes of Bridgerton, the real Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and her place within British society, the importance of chaperones for young ladies to protect their reputations, the double standard of behaviour for men and women, the ways in which aristocratic titles worked and who could inherit them, the Regency marriage market, whether gossip columns like Lady Whistledown’s really existed (and how likely it is that Penelope Featherington could get away with her side hustle), the Grand Tour of Europe which Colin Bridgerton has just returned from at the start of season 3 and the place of black people within British society in the nineteenth century, including how likely it is that the Duke of Hastings would be black, or any of the other aristocratic characters. I’ll ask if corsets really were torture devices for women, what shape were undergarments for ladies in this period, what happened to all the bonnets, did people really talk like that in the early 1800s and what kind of education did women have in reality? Could they really sing, dance, speak four languages, do needlework and be widely read too, or has Bridgerton invented its clever female characters?
I hope you enjoy this review of Bridgerton and its historical (in)accuracies.
