Artisan Makes | Every Home Workshop Should Have These Drills @artisanmakes | Uploaded 2 years ago | Updated 2 hours ago
G'day everyone,
I have been meaning to get a new set of stub length or screw machine length twist drills for the workshop. These drills are about 40% shorter than regular jobber length drills that are found in general hardware stores. The longer jobber length drills are more prone to flexing and wandering during cutting and can lead to drills drilling in the incorrect location, or the drill wandering whilst cutting a hole. For this reason screw machine length drills are commonly used in CNC mills and CNC lathes, because they do not require spot drilling, unless high accuracy is needed.
Unfortunately a set of stub drills is not easy to come buy for an affordable price, so I am attempting grind a set from some inexpensive jobber drills. I grind them on the bench grinder and put them to the test. I am not the greatest drill sharpener, but the results should speak for themselves. I do not have the tools required to grind split points, so the drills that are used must be 118 degree drills which will have a thinner web.
Note that this is not a tutorial on sharpening drill bits.
I will finish off by making a drill stand / drill index on the mini milling machine. I hope you enjoy the video.
