On 22 June 2026, the Institute of English Studies, School of Advanced Study hosted an event to celebrate the publication of “Information at War: A Communication History of the Ministry of Information 1939 – 1946, edited by Professor Simon Eliot (Professor Emeritus of the History of the Book at the Institute of English Studies) and Dr Henry Irving (Senior Lecturer in Public History at Leeds Beckett University). The event included an archival display from Senate House Library.
This multi-authored volume explores the very wide range of activities undertaken by the Ministry of Information, both in Britain and in scores of countries overseas.
University of London’s Senate House was the centre of the MOI’s many activities, and remained open and active twenty-four hours a day for the entirety of the war. This video includes interviews with Professor Eliot and Dr Irving, as well as Institute of English Studies Director Professor Clare Lees, in which they discuss the event.
