Psychology and Refugee Protection seminar series: Trauma and Credibility

Professor Chris Brewin; Dr Stuart Turner

Ms Robertson is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and will discuss some of the barriers to integration due to psychological distress, and the role of psychological treatment in helping to facilitate integration. Dr Thompson will consider the extent to which the societal narrative painting refugees as resourceless recipients of aid might be fed by an "integration agenda", drawing on interesting findings from research in Scandinavia and including the voices of refugees themselves. Dr Gidley is a Senior Researcher at ESRC Centre on Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS) University of Oxford, primarily working on projects in the Citizenship and Belonging, Urban Change and Settlement, and Welfare clusters. Dr Kathrani is a Lecturer in Law at the School of Law, University of Westminster and his academic work looks at the confluence of 'refugee law and theory', particularly the perception and treatment of asylum seekers as outsiders.
