On the evening of August 16, 2024 I spent about 20 minutes on the platform the NoMa - Gallaudet U WMATA station observing the rush hour traffic in and out of Washington DC Union Station. The central station of the nation's capital was a flurry of activity as electric Amtrak trains began and ended their runs along the Northeast Corridor, MARC commuter trains shuttled workers to their homes in Maryland, Amtrak and VRE diesels rolled in from Ivy City yard to begin their runs south into Virginia, and the WMATA Metro Red line provided continuous service with trains every few minutes. As someone from a part of the country with zero passenger rail of any kind, it was a sight to behold.
