Cooking up a storm…
A succession of recent visitors to the office have been curious as to why a family of pan lids have taken up residence on top of my 52-inch timpani. The aim was to declutter my kitchen but [as those of you who know me will be well aware] nothing is discarded until the sound possibilities have thoroughly come to boil!
This clip shows that nearly anything can be a percussion instrument if you find a way to forge sound with it.

Video description: Evelyn, dressed in a blue and marl grey striped top and with her long silver-grey hair loose around her shoulders, uses a wide range of mallets, super-balls and some metal chopsticks to strike eight pan-lids of varying sizes. The resulting sonic landscape is eerie, with bell-like tones and deep booms combined, as the silver lids shiver whilst they resonate on the timpani head.
