High School Chemistry

Ethene can be used by food suppliers to control the ripening of bananas.

We wanted to investigate this in a high school chemistry experiment.

Cracking liquid paraffin is an experiment commonly carried out at high school.

Liquid paraffin is passed over hot, broken porcelain pot and the product gases collected over water in test-tubes.

Five test-tubes of gas were collected, which were assumed to contain some ethene as one of the cracking products.

The gas in the test-tubes was released into a large plastic bag containing some green bananas.

The bag was sealed and left to sit next to some more green bananas cut from the same bunch which were open to the atmosphere in the lab.

On another video clip the results of the experiment can be observed after 2 days.
