In Tamahaq, the language of the Tuareg, 'Essuf' names the space beyond the camp - the open silence where a person walks without an audience, without a role to perform. It is solitude, but not emptiness. It is where thought becomes yours again.
This film follows a trip into Tassili n'Ajjer, in the Algerian Sahara - a place chosen years earlier, almost by accident, after a single photograph of cave paintings lodged itself in memory and waited. No real plan. No internet. No real reason beyond the pull of it.
What it became was something else: a way of asking a question that has no clean answer - whether the images we make come from genuine curiosity, or from the quiet, constant pull of who might be watching. Whether it's possible to make anything, including this film, without performing for someone.
Algeria didn't answer those questions. But it showed me I needed to keep asking them. And maybe that's the whole point.
